DaiMao fanfiction, "Ready"
Authors Note: Mao’s first name gets annoying to type. I sometimes kept forgetting how to spell it properly. I got the hang of it tho. lol
Mao's thoughts are in bold italic.

Title: Ready
Pairing: Daisuke & Mao

Late Fall 2011

The weather in Tokyo was gloomy, chilly, and heavy on the winds that night, but that didn't stop crowds of young adults from making a late night ramen trip at a popular local hangout. It was also not uncommon to find plenty of young stage actors satisfying their hunger there either.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Why was it so hard to focus?
Hamao Kyousuke stared hard at the menu trying to find a dish to eat. He couldn't really concentrate, due to being a tad bit nervous. Sitting across from him at the table was none other than his respected peer, close friend, co-worker, and crush, Watanabe Daisuke. Yes, he was all of those things to Kyousuke believe it or not. They hadn't seen each other in two weeks due to their hectic schedule. They were constantly doing musicals and had recently finished promoting the last Takumi-kun film at an event. 2011 was a very busy year for both of them. The only use of communication used during their brief separation was through email or text messaging. Naturally Daisuke was the one to initiate those conversations, since he was more forward.
“Are you sure you don’t want to try another place?” Daisuke asked in concern, as placed his menu back down on the table. He noticed Kyousuke’s tense expression.
“Oh. No this is just fine.” Kyousuke gave the older man a quick reassuring smile before glancing at the menu again. “I know what I want.”
He shouldn't be so nervous. They had known each other for five years by this point. The fact remained, he was completely comfortable with Daisuke, but this was different. Daisuke made an impromptu visit to Kyousuke's stage play that night and invited him out for a late dinner. There were no co-workers involved this time, just them. This felt like an actual date and he desperately hoped Daisuke thought the same. Sometimes, he thought it was no good to think like that. In the back of his mind, he believed that Daisuke actually shared the same romantic feelings, but never pursued it any further due to the age difference. He assumed that the 29 year old was wary of “taking advantage” of him. The only difference was that Kyousuke wanted him to.
The two men gave their orders to the waiter.
They were no strangers to physical embraces, touches, intimate looks, and light flirting. It became more apparent during that year. All these moments triggered Kyousuke to act abnormally shy around the lather. Oh, there were moments where he let himself go and engage in outgoing conversations with Daisuke, but that was rare. Usually he would just let Daisuke lead, because he felt safe. He let the man lead because deep down inside he wanted to belong to him.
“Mao-kun you were great tonight,” began Daisuke excitedly. “I can't believe you could do that type of role. I’m really proud of you.” He smiled warmly.
Kyousuke felt his face grow hot, especially at the look his friend was giving him. “Thank you, but I don’t think I did that good. I could have done better….”
“Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’m glad I came...”
“I’m glad you came too.” There was a brief pause. Embarrassed, Kyousuke decided that his hands were very "interesting" that moment, concentrating hard on his knuckles. He quickly changed the subject. “Um, did you get a chance to read the new script for the new play that we’re gonna be in?”
He heard Daisuke slightly chuckle. “Yeah, of course.” Daisuke began to gush on about how he was glad they were getting an opportunity to work together again and how he had to pull a few strings with their agencies for it to happen.
So it was you…
“Mao…”
“Eh?”
“You spaced out there for a minute.”
“No I didn’t.”
“I’m pretty sure you did.”
I did.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The ramen dinner unfortunately ended quickly for them and the two actors found themselves outside the shop pondering what to do next.

“Should we go home?” Daisuke asked, softly bumping his shoulder against Kyousuke playfully.

“I don’t know…” Kyousuke frowned. He didn't want it to be over. It’s been so long since they last saw each other. “Did you want coffee?” He suggested.

Daisuke’s face brightened. “Sure, come on.” He reached out for Kyousuke’s wrist and led him along completely ignoring the fact that they looked like a hand-holding couple out in public. That’s when Kyousuke’s heart started to race at lightning speed.

Dai-chan.
He almost couldn't breathe. He even forgot how cold it was outside as they weaved in and out of the crowd.
Dai-chan, this…really is a date?
His eyes were dreamily focused on the back of Daisuke’s head, mesmerized by the honey brown locks.
Will you confess? Kyousuke scolded himself inwardly. Don’t be so stupid. He’s just acting like a “big brother” right now.
“Let’s go to Starbucks,” he heard Daisuke suggest. “Is that okay with you Mao?”

“Yes.” Kyousuke softly replied trying to suppress a grin. Daisuke was still leading the way, as he wandered behind. What was it that made him let his guard down around the older man? Why did he become so submissive at his very presence, at his touch, and his simple instructions?

Once at their destination, Daisuke quickly let go of Kyousuke’s wrist so he wouldn't draw any more suspicion. They headed in.

I should tell him.

Kyousuke so desperately yearned that something more would happen tonight. He was still surprised that he was having these thoughts. Was he that lonely? So lonely that he didn’t want to wait any longer for Daisuke to get over the age gap guilt? To hell with being cautious, Kyousuke knew he was responsible, besides he just became an adult that past summer. He was ready.

The smell of coffee smelled so good, but he wasn't a coffee drinker. He decided that he would order tea instead.
They settled down at a table hidden in the corner.

Daisuke leaned over the table slightly, trying to control the distance between Kyousuke and him in the most obvious manner. His large latte sat comfortably between his fingertips. “I’m not at all sleepy yet, but I have to get up early tomorrow morning.”

Kyousuke’s heart was still pounding against his chest excitedly. “I should be exhausted too, but I’m not.” It was hard to remain neutral. “I don’t think I want to go home.” He didn’t realize the words that just left his mouth.

Impressed Daisuke responded with, “Oh really? Where would you like to go next? Karaoke or a bar…?”

“Um…how about you’re…place?” Kyousuke blurted out uneasily. He brought the cup of tea to his mouth and pretended to take a sip. He avoided eye contact.

Daisuke’s brows raised, even more impressed. He leaned back in his chair slightly. “My apartment?”

“You don’t have to invite me over…um it was just a suggestion…sorry!”

Daisuke shook his head quickly. “Mao, it’s okay…it’s okay. Listen I’m not mad at you or anything. You see, my place is not really ready for company...”

“Oh well, p-please forget that I even mentioned it…” Kyousuke stammered. His face turned apple red and there was no way of hiding it. He wanted to bury himself under the ground. This was his chance to evolve their relationship and practically give Daisuke a sign that he wanted more, but he blew it. Well, he thought he blew it. He didn't know that Daisuke was very aware of what was happening.

“Mao, you can come over tonight.”

“Dai-chan you don’t have to…wait what?”

Daisuke smirked. “You’re too cute.”

Kyousuke’s eyes widened. “Eh?”

Daisuke casually pushed his coffee to the side. “Don’t give me that look.” He teased.

Confession?

“You can come over.”

Kyousuke was at a loss for words. “Dai-chan…” He had to gather up his courage. It was the perfect time and he had a feeling that Daisuke knew what this was all about. “Dai-chan…?”

“Kyousuke?” The older man gently replied.

Kyousuke stared at him pensively, “Why? Why did you make me wait so long?”

No answer, just a radiating smile.

Kyousuke whispered timidly, “I like you…is that okay?”

“That’s more than okay.”

“You already knew?”

“Of course.”

“How long?”

“We can discuss this over at my place.” Daisuke said suggestively.

Kyousuke nodded slowly. He felt Daisuke’s hand cover his own across the table. He continued, “You don’t have to be embarrassed and I’m sorry...I’m sorry I made you wait.”

The younger boy nodded, silently accepting the apology and now eager to move the relationship forward.
